Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Ash Wednesday
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:19
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40-day journey toward Easter, and the first day of Lent. It invites us into a deep season of remembrance and repentance.
Examine your heart honestly. Where is there selfishness, pride, greed, control, bitterness, or anger?
Lay down self-reliance.
Return to dependence on Christ.
During an Ash Wednesday service, ashes are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes symbolize two realities:
Human frailty – We are finite. Our lives are brief. We are not self-sustaining.
Repentance – In Scripture, ashes were a sign of humility and turning back to God.
The cross shape reminds us that even in our mortality and sin, we are marked by Christ’s redemption.
Today’s Promise: We are finite, and God is in control. The Lord will teach us how to live wisely, walk with Him, and posture our lives towards Him.
Application:
Set aside 20–30 minutes in a quiet place.
Ask:
Where have I been self-reliant instead of God-dependent?
What patterns in my life are dulling my love for Christ?
Where do I need to repent? Pray aloud: “I turn from this. Help me walk differently.”
Read Psalm 51 slowly. Let it guide confession.
