Dear Mentor, I feel unnoticed.

When I Feel Unnoticed

“The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them.” ~ Psalm 11:4

Dear Christian Mentor,

I have wrestled with self-doubt for many years. I grew up with the misconception that if I tried my hardest, everything I set my mind to would work out. If I were unsuccessful, it must have been because I did something wrong. How do I rest in the truth that God sees and values me when I still feel unnoticed, unsuccessful, or not enough by the world’s standards?

Dear Mentee,

Life has a way of grading us from the moment we are born. As infants, we are measured by our weight and height, and later, in preschool, we are graded on our knowledge of numbers and the alphabet. As we progress through primary school, our success is determined by standardized testing. While life’s grading scale has its benefits, it can also lead to feelings of self-doubt, perfectionism, and failure.

Today’s verse brings a smile to my face. I love the image of the Lord sitting on His heavenly throne, examining His beloved children. He looks at us with His eyes and sees our hard work, efforts, desires, shortcomings, and areas for growth. He doesn’t categorize us as excellent, satisfactory, needs improvement, or unsatisfactory because, to God, we are His perfect creations. He sees our strengths and weaknesses and helps us grow through his grace. God’s desire isn’t for us to try to do everything perfectly, but to be willing to be used by Him. Throughout the Bible, the Lord uses the lowly, weak, broken, unnoticed, and those society may deem as ‘less than,’ to do His great work. This reminds us that our worth is not determined by social standards but through the love of God.

The Lord sees you today. You are His perfect creation. How can you find comfort in this promise that the Lord sees you?
