Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Silence)
Silence
"In returning and rest you shall be saved; In the quietness and trust shall be your strength” ~ Isaiah 30:15
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
Today, we practice the beauty of stillness. Often, the first thing silence reveals is how noisy our inner world truly is. This awareness reminds us that intimacy with God grows in spaces where distraction decreases.
Lent is not primarily about what we give up; it is about what we make space for.
Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord speaks to a restless, anxious people striving for security through their own alliances and strategies. His invitation is counterintuitive: return, rest, be quiet, trust. Strength would not come through activity, but through returning to the quiet stillness of the Lord.
Fast:
Today, fast from unnecessary noise. Turn off background television. Resist reflexive scrolling. Avoid filling every silent moment with input. Protect intentional silence.
Today’s Promise:
When you return to God in quiet rest, He strengthens you. Not by adrenaline. Not by urgency. But by His presence, he calms our anxiety and restores our souls.
Application:
Set aside at least 10–20 uninterrupted minutes. Sit comfortably. Take slow breaths. Offer a simple prayer:
“Lord, I am here. Speak, for I am listening.”
Then be still.
If your mind wanders, gently return to the Lord without self-criticism. Stillness is a practice that grows over time.
Reflect:
How did the quiet and stillness make you feel?
Restless? Relieved? Uncomfortable? Exposed? What thoughts surfaced?
Anxiety? To-do lists? Regrets? Gratitude? What do you need to pray about and surrender to God?
Name it specifically. Release it intentionally.
