Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent?(Surrender)
Surrender
"He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” ~ Colossians 1:17
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
On this day of Lent, let’s search ourselves for awareness of things in our lives that we need to surrender to our Lord.
Colossians reminds us that Christ precedes every circumstance and sustains every outcome. The situation you are facing is not outside His authority. The area of life you fear may fall apart is, in truth, being held together by Him. God cannot move in our circumstances unless we surrender them and give Him space to help and guide us.
Surrender is an act of trust.
Reflection:
What is the most difficult situation you are facing today?
How do you normally work through tough situations?
What would surrender look like in practical terms this week?
What unhealthy pattern might the Lord be inviting you to fast from?
Fast: Today, fast from:
Holding tightly to a difficult situation.
Worrying about outcomes you cannot control.
Trying to fix in your own strength what requires God’s authority.
Avoiding the situation through an unhealthy coping tendency (distraction, overworking, withdrawal, overeating, alcohol, etc.).
Fasting in Lent is not only about food. It is about relinquishment. It is about identifying what you grip for security and consciously opening your hands.
Today’s Promise: God has all authority in your life. He is not scrambling to manage your circumstances. He is not reacting. He is sovereign, steady, and sustaining.
You can not hold everything together, but He can and will when you surrender it.
Application: (10–20 Minutes of Intentional Stillness)
Sit comfortably in a quiet space.
Take slow, steady breaths.
Inhale: “You are before all things.”
Exhale: “You hold all things together.”Visualize the difficult situation in your hands.
One by one, release it to the Lord in prayer.
Pray:
“Lord Jesus, I surrender this to You. Where I have tried to control, forgive me. Where I have worried, calm me. Where I have avoided, strengthen me. I trust that You hold this — and You hold me.”
