Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Day 6 Negative Thoughts)

Calming Our Negative Thoughts

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

~ Isaiah 28:3

Dear Christian Mentor,

I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?

Dear Mentee,

Today in our Lenten walk, we turn our attention inward—to the place where peace is most often lost and most deeply restored: the mind.

So much of our unrest begins in the mind. Unchecked thoughts can steal our peace, distort reality, and slowly pull our focus away from the Lord. Scripture reminds us that perfect peace is not found in perfect circumstances, but in a mind that is anchored—stayed—on God.

Isaiah reminds us that perfect peace is possible—not because life becomes calm, but because our inner world becomes anchored. Perfect peace does not mean the absence of anxiety, stress, or uncertainty. It means the presence of trust. It is the settled confidence that God is who He says He is and will do what He has promised to do.

When our minds stay on the Lord—on His character, His faithfulness, His provision—our anxious and fear-driven thoughts begin to lose their authority. They may still knock, but they no longer rule. Over time, we find ourselves walking in confidence and contentment today, tomorrow, and into the future—not because circumstances are predictable, but because God is trustworthy.

Application:

  • What thoughts were swirling in your mind when you woke up this morning?

  • How many of those thoughts were negative, fearful, or anxiety-driven?

  • What themes seem to repeat themselves throughout your day?

  • How often in your day do you turn your focus to God through prayer, the Bible, or worship?

Fast: Today, fast from allowing your thoughts to spiral into negativity.
When you notice your mind drifting toward fear, worry, or worst-case scenarios, gently interrupt that pattern.

Slow your breathing.
Return your focus to the Lord.
Recite today’s verse aloud or quietly:

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”

Today’s Promise: There is a pathway to peace for your mind. When you focus your thoughts on the Lord and place your trust in Him, peace follows—not as a fleeting feeling, but as a steady posture of the heart.
