Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Restoring Brokenness)
Restoring Brokenness
"Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand." ~ Isaiah 64:8
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
We live in a broken world and, therefore, are susceptible to the things of this world that can break us—disappointment, sin, loss, harmful words of others, and mistreatment. But we are not left in that brokenness.
We have a loving Father who refuses to leave us as we are. Instead, He gently gathers every broken piece and begins the careful, intentional process of reshaping us. Like a potter with clay, God molds, presses, refines, and rebuilds—not to harm us, but to restore us into something beautiful and whole.
Isaiah 64:8 reminds us that we are the clay and God is our potter. Clay does not shape itself, but it must be surrendered into the hands of the one creating it. In the same way, Lent is an invitation to surrender. Surrendering our brokenness and allowing God access to our hearts so He can do His transforming work.
Sometimes the shaping process feels uncomfortable. It may require letting go of control, confronting areas of sin, processing through healing, or trusting God in uncertainty. But we can take comfort in knowing this: the hands shaping us are the hands of a loving Father.
Today’s Promise:
God only makes masterpieces. He takes our brokenness and redeems it, shaping our lives into who He created us to be.
Application Questions:
What areas of my life feel broken or unfinished right now?
Am I resisting God’s shaping in any area? If so, why?
What would it look like for me to fully surrender to God as the potter of my life?
How can I trust God more in the process, even when it feels uncomfortable?
Today’s Fast:
Fast from staying in the brokenness.
Today, intentionally pray over the areas of brokenness in your life, asking the potter to shape the brokenness into something new.
"Lord, I trust You as the potter. Shape me as You will."
