Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Day 28)
Past, Present, Future
"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” ~ Isaiah 43:18-19
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
As spring approaches, we begin to see vibrant colors return to the world around us. What once felt dormant and lifeless is now awakening. Spring is a beautiful reminder of newness, freshness, and life.
In the same way, Isaiah 43:18–19 reminds us that God is always at work, creating something new within us. But to recognize His movement, we must first be willing to let go of what is behind us.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past” is an invitation to lay down what we’ve been carrying—past failures, past successes, and even our own expectations of how life should look. When we cling to the past, we can miss what God is doing right in front of us.
“I am doing a new thing” points to God’s active and present work in our lives. He is not distant—He is continually restoring, renewing, and drawing us forward into His purpose.
“I am making a way in the wilderness” reminds us that even in seasons of uncertainty, confusion, or struggle, God is our guide. He is faithful to lead us, even when the path is unclear.
“And streams in the wasteland” assures us that no place is too dry or too broken for God to bring life. Where things may feel hopeless or impossible, He can create renewal and abundance.
Today’s Promise:
Our Lord is always at work, creating new life and making a way for us—even when we cannot yet see it.
Application Questions:
What part of my past is God asking me to release in this season?
Where might I be missing the “new thing” God is doing in my life?
In what area do I need to trust God to make a way for me?
How can I intentionally shift my focus from the past to what God is doing today?
Today’s Fast:
Fast from dwelling on the past. When thoughts of regret, failure, or even past success arise, surrender them to God and refocus your heart on His present work in your life.
