Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Darkness to Redemption)

Darkness to Redemption

“It is finished.” ~ John 19:30

Dear Christian Mentor,

I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?

Dear Mentee,

Good Friday is the day Jesus died on the cross. Nothing about the first Good Friday seemed good, but because we know the whole story, we can now see the goodness found in it: our sins were paid for, the curtain separating us from God was torn in two—opening a direct pathway to the Father—and eternal life was given. Good Friday reminds us that God can take the darkest, most painful moments of our lives and use them for redemption and victory.

Holy Saturday represents the heaviness and darkness in between the unjust and difficult situations this world will give us. It is those periods of life where we grieve, mourn, question, doubt, feel hopeless, and are desperate for direction. It is holy because even in the silence, God is still at work. Though it may feel like nothing is happening, He is moving in ways we cannot yet see and preparing for the resurrection, even when all hope seems lost. Holy Saturday teaches us to trust God in the waiting, to remain faithful when answers don’t come, and to believe that silence is not absence.

Easter Sunday—He has risen! The beauty of Easter represents the redemption from the darkness of death into the light of new life. What seemed final was not the end. The grave could not hold Him, and because of that, the darkness in our lives does not have the final word either. Easter declares that hope is alive, that redemption is real, and that in Christ, every ending can become a new beginning.

Today’s Promise:
God is working even in the silence. What feels like an ending is often the beginning of His redemption story. Because of Jesus, darkness never has the final word—resurrection is coming.

Application Questions:

  • Where in your life are you experiencing a “Holy Saturday” season—waiting, uncertainty, or silence?

  • What would it look like to trust God in that space, even without clear answers?

  • How has God brought redemption out of darkness in your life before?

  • What truth from Easter can you hold onto today as a reminder of hope?

Today’s Fast:
Fast from rushing through the waiting. Instead of seeking immediate answers or distractions, sit with God in the stillness. When you feel the urge to escape the discomfort, pause and pray: “Lord, help me trust You in the in-between.”
