Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Day 34 Selfishness)
Selfishness
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you in the interests of the others.” ~ Philippians 2:3
Dear Christian Mentor,
I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?
Dear Mentee,
Selfishness vs. Selflessness and Sacrifice
Every day, we are faced with a choice—will we live for ourselves, or will we live surrendered to God for the sake of others? Selfishness draws us inward, centering our desires, comfort, and control. But selflessness and sacrifice call us outward, inviting us to love deeply, give freely, and trust God fully.
Selfishness says, “Protect your time, your comfort, your way.”
Selflessness says, “Consider others.”
Sacrifice says, “Lay it down in love.”
Selflessness begins in the heart. It is the posture of humility that sees others as valuable and worthy of care. Sacrifice is the action that follows. It is choosing to give of yourself, even when it costs you something. Together, they reflect the very heart of Christ.
Jesus didn’t just teach selflessness; He lived it fully. He continually poured Himself out through His time, His compassion, and ultimately His life. His sacrifice was not forced, but freely given out of love. And He invites us to walk in that same way.
This kind of living is not always easy. It requires surrender, trust, and a willingness to let go of control. But in doing so, we discover something deeper than comfort—we find purpose, joy, and a closer walk with God.
Today’s Promise: God honors a humble heart. As you choose to serve and put others before yourself, He will provide for your needs, shape your character, and fill you with a deeper joy that cannot be found in self-seeking.
Application Questions:
Where in my life am I prioritizing myself over others?
What is one practical way I can walk in selflessness today?
What small sacrifice is God inviting me to make in this season?
Today’s Fast:
Fast from self-first thinking. When you feel the urge to choose comfort, recognition, or control over the interests of others, pause and ask, “How can I love, serve, and reflect Christ in this moment?”
