Dear Christian Mentor, Can you walk with me through Lent? (Day 21 Lies We Believe)

The Lies We Believe

"Do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” ~ Romans 12:2

Dear Christian Mentor,

I have participated in Lent many times, but it often feels like something I should do rather than an experience that draws me closer to the Lord. Can you walk with me through the season of Lent?

Dear Mentee,

“It’s my fault.”
“I am not good enough.”
“There is something wrong with me.”
“I will always be alone.”
“If I could just have ______, then my life would be amazing.”
“I can fix them.”
“It is what it is, and will never change.”
“God could never love someone like me.”

These thoughts can quietly settle into our minds and begin to shape how we see ourselves, others, and even God.

Often, lies begin with a painful experience or words spoken over us. Over time, those moments can plant seeds of doubt that grow into beliefs we carry for years. Before we realize it, these lies begin to distort the truth and influence how we live our lives.

Scripture reminds us that we have an enemy who desires exactly that. In John 8:44, we are told that Satan is the “father of lies.” In 1 Peter 5:8, we are warned that the enemy “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” His goal is to distort truth, damage our identity, and pull us away from the life God has for us.

But the good news is that God does not leave us defenseless.

Through His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit, He shows us how to recognize lies and replace them with truth. Transformation begins when we allow the Lord to renew our minds. As Romans 12:2 reminds us, God reshapes our thinking so we can see clearly, discern His will, and walk in the freedom He desires for us.

When we surrender our thoughts to God, He gently begins replacing lies with truth:

“I am not good enough” becomes
I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

“I will always be alone” becomes
God is always with me.

“God could never love someone like me” becomes
Nothing can separate me from the love of Christ.

Renewing our minds is not a one-time moment—it is a daily practice of returning to truth. This Lent, the Lord invites us to notice the lies we have believed and bring them into His light.

Today’s Promise: God is transforming you as He renews your mind. His truth is stronger than any lie, and His love for you is unshakable.

Application:

Take a few moments to reflect:

• What lies have you allowed to define you?
• When did you first begin believing them?
• How might God’s truth speak into those places today?

Consider writing one lie you have believed and asking God to show you the truth He wants you to hold onto instead.

Today’s Fast:

Fast from believing the lies that speak against your identity.

When a negative thought arises today, pause and bring it before the Lord. Ask Him to replace it with His truth.

Let this be a day where your mind begins to be renewed—one thought at a time.
